1. A day in Grant County
Morning
Lloyd's Wildlife area with 1,179 acres of virgin forest is the perfect spot for studying Kentucky wildflowers, watching the many species of birds, or just a relaxing morning fishing at Leary Lake. Lloyd's Wildlife area is located on Hwy. 491 in Crittenden, a short drive off I-75 Exit 166.
Afternoon
Shopping at the Dry Ridge Outlet Center, I-75 Exit 159, is a bargain hunters' delight. The friendly employees in each store always express their southern hospitality, which makes your shopping experience a pleasure. Be sure to stop in the Grant County Tourism Center first to pickup your store coupons. While you're in the shopping mood, travel 2 1/2 miles on Hwy. 467 to the nationally known "Quilt Box". This shop was rated one of the top ten in the nation. Over 5500 bolts of fabric are awaiting quilters from afar. Husbands can practice their golf swing, fish in the family lake, or just relax on the scenic patio.859-824-4007
Evening
Spend your evening on a true working farm in Williamstown. Farmer Bill's offers a petting zoo, playground, carriage rides, horseback riding, and has an onsite restaurant, offering home cooked meals. 2. Weekends
Visit Grant County's newest attraction Kentucky Cowtown located just off I-75 Exit 154. This huge indoor arena features many types of equestrian events, as well as farm machinery shows, auctions, and other farm related shows. For a list of upcoming events, visit their website, www.kycowtown.com
3. Historic and Nature Itinerary
Begin your day with a hike in Lloyd's Woods in Crittenden, I-75 Exit 166. Lloyd's is a state maintained woods with over a thousand acres of virgin forest. Bring along your fishing pole. Leary Lake, a part of Lloyd's Wildlife Management Area, is just down the road on Hwy. 491. The five acre fishing lake has an abundance of wild flowers, surrounding the water's edge. The Autumn Maple trees bowing before the water, will be perfect for a photo shoot.
Travel back East on Hwy. 491 to Hwy. 25. Turn right and then an immediate left into the Grant County Park. Drive to your left, and you will see two African American structures, that have been restored. One of the few remaining historic Rosenwald Schools has been restored. It sits beside Rice Chapel, a church used by black families in our community for many years.
If you have children, they will enjoy the playground equipment, and the family can picnic at one of the many shelters.
When you leave the park, turn right on Hwy. 25, continue a mile or so. On the right you will see another historic structure, The Sherman Tavern. It is one of the few remaining stage coach stops left in Kentucky.
Continue driving South on Hwy. 25, around 10 miles into Williamstown. On Main Street you will see a restored log cabin, The William Arnold Log Home. This was the home of William Arnold, the founder of Williamstown. Mr. Arnold was friends with Gen. Lafayette, who he had the honor of entertaining in his home, in the early 1800s. This home is open for visitors on Fridays.
You'll also find an antique store on Main Street, as well as a great family owned restaurant called The Forum.
By now, you must be ready for a good night's sleep. Exits 159, 154, & 144 have several nice lodging facilities.
