Fleming County Itinerary
Day One: Begin your day in Fleming County with a tour of the Covered Bridges. Start in Flemingsburg at the Chamber of Commerce office at 114 West Water Street for a map and then drive to the Grange City Covered Bridge on Hwy 111. Turn around at the Grange City Bridge and drive back to Hillsboro on Hwy 111. Turn right on Hwy 158 and drive to the Ringos Mills Covered Bridge. Turn left on Rawlings Road and stop for a visit or picnic lunch on the bridge. After your break continue on Rawlings Road to KY 32. Turn left onto Hwy 32 and drive a few miles to the Goddard Covered Bridge. You will want to drive through the bridge if in a car and enjoy the beautiful setting of the bridge. If you are on a tour bus, continue on KY 32 to the next road to the right (Goddard Road and then turn right onto Covered Bridge Road. This will lead you to a parking area in front of the Goddard United Methodist Church where you can park and walk through the Goddard Covered Bridge, the only town lattice covered bridge left in Kentucky. Total drive for the three bridges in Fleming County is approximately 60 miles. Additional covered bridges are located nearby near Blue Licks State Park, Tollesboro and Maysville.
For shopping head back to Flemingsburg on Hwy 32 west. On the way you will see Yoder’s Country Market, which has crafts, foods and artwork, a good place to sit on the front porch and enjoy a country ham sandwich.
Time to head back to Flemingsburg and enjoy a good meal and night of rest and relaxation. We have a bed and breakfast that is very popular. Stockton Station Inn is a great place to spend the night. Various fast food restaurants are available including the best Dairy Queen in the state. LaFinca Mexican Restaurant located near the by-pass provides a sit down opportunity to plan your shopping. While spending the night take a stroll around town to enjoy all the historic buildings.
After a night of rest antiquing or history might be your taste. The Fleming County Library has a wealth of information on genealogy and history. For antiques visit the following shops in Flemingsburg, Craintiques, Coopers Antiques, Antiques Collectible & Sportscards, then head out of town for Wayne Crafts Antiques on Hwy 111 and Humphries Antiques off Hwy 111 in Poplar Plains. You will find many beautiful and simple antiques in these shop. Don't forget to check out our galleries, Doodle's and Banana Tree Studios.
Another option would be to tour locations of Amish homes in the county. The largest location of Amish homes and home-based business is located near Poplar Plains. Take Poplar Plains Road, to Orchard Road, turn left on Orchard Road this will take you past several Amish homes and return you to Hwy 111 between Hillsboro and Poplar Plains. Return to Flemingsburg on Hwy 111. Finally before you leave you will want to visit Elizaville Cemetery where one of our famous sons is buried. PFC Franklin Sousley was one of the Marines captured in a famous photograph by Joe Rosenthal’s photo of the flag raising on Iwo Jima during World War II. The photograph was immortalized by the construction of a monument in Washington D.C. and a copy of the monument was built in Elizaville Cemetery for all to visit.
If you are interested in hunting or fishing you should visit the Fleming County Wildlife area at Beechburg. This is a 2,070-acre area that is primarily oak-hickory woods with some croplands and woodland openings. Squirrel, deer, grouse, dove, raccoon, quail, and rabbit are present. Large pond holds large-mouth bass, bluegill and channel catfish annually. Primitive camping. All legal permits are required and hunting only in season.
